WiFi Map, allows users to use Wi-Fi for free worldwide. With its user-friendly interface and extensive database, you can easily find free Wi-Fi networks nearby and connect within a few clicks1.

WiFi Map was founded in 2014 with the aim of becoming a ‘community-driven wireless network and self-funded startup’.

Co-founded by Denis Sklyarov (CEO) and Igor Goldenberg (CTO), it has grown to around 30 team members worldwide.

Denis and Igor worked together at Kenlo Group, an award-winning software development company for mobile apps, until they realised that there was a huge number of people who couldn't travel the world with a reliable internet connection.

At the time, people would scour Foursquare, Facebook, Tripadvisor and other platforms for details of their travel destinations to find out in advance if Wi-Fi was available - a necessity for the budget-conscious traveller, as mobile data was very expensive at the time.

Seeing that users on some platforms were happy to share this information with strangers without expecting anything in return, they had an idea: could all this information be centralised in one app so that people could access it quickly and easily?

The early days of WiFi Map were born, and as a co-creator, the duo was able to earn $300 per month in app revenue. However, because WiFi Map was driven by a community of travellers, people in countries with inadequate network infrastructure, when they added the ‘Add Wi-Fi’ button, many people started adding hotspots voluntarily.

Since then, WiFi Map has added more ‘user services’ such as a map of Wi-Fi hotspots around the world (viewable offline), an eSIM plan (mobile data when Wi-Fi is not available), a VPN service, and a network speed test, which has led to rapid adoption in low-income countries such as Indonesia and India.

Eventually, this community of contributors became an army of influencers and WiFi Map went global without any marketing. Over the next 8+ years, WiFi Map built a powerful two-way economy around hotspot sharing and privacy. They have incentivised over 13 million contributors to add over 100 million Wi-Fi hotspots through an in-app ‘points’ system, which gives contributors discounts on purchases.

In the summer of 2022, WiFi Map announced that it will launch a native token, $WIFI, on the Polygon network, replacing Points as the store of value, unit of account, and medium of exchange. It is important to note that previous Points cannot be exchanged 1:1 with $WIFI tokens. Actually, tokens are not the first choice for WiFi Map, it's just that payment methods such as PayPal are too expensive and not accepted in many countries.

WiFi Map's mission is to provide free Internet access to people around the world. Connectivity brings freedom of speech and expression, equal access to education, freedom of conscience and much more. The team believes that everyone on the planet deserves a free, stable, secure and fast internet connection!
